“Veerle, what should I definitely do in Iceland?” I get the question all the time as it is no secret that I lost my heart in Iceland. So I decided to give you an overview of all the blogposts I did about about Iceland here.
In 2002 I studied a few months at Háskóla Íslands, the University of Iceland, which was the beginning of this long-lasting love affair. I have returned many times ever since. I need it. It’s the only place where I can fully recharge my batteries. And after all: one trip a year to the Land of the Nice is cheaper than seeing a shrink.
If you fancy travelling there, please take the Golden Circle: Thingvellir, Gulfoss and Geysir. Those places are amazing! But for those who have more time at their hands, here are my recommendations.
Water everywhere
- Iceland is a waterfall walhalla: an overview of all my favourites
- Hraunfossar and Barnafoss: this children’s tragedy is worth a detour
- Jökulsárlón: a breath-taking glacial lake which inspired a lot of film directors
- Skógafoss: the hidden treasure requires a bit of legwork, but is rather close-by
- Góđafoss: a waterfall full of saga’s
- The lighthouse in Akranes.
Lovely Mývatn
- Mývatn in general
- Krafla: walk on the moon
- Hverrir: steamy, smelly hot spot
- Dimmuborgir: metal lava
Hidden gems
- Djúpalónssandur: the beach where my husband proposed, but even before that it was already my favourite!
- Berserkjahraun: a sad lava story
- Snaefellsnesjökull: snowcat trip to the top of a volcano-glacier
- The three previous ones are situated in Snaefellsnes, my favourite part in Iceland, which is often overlooked by tourists.
- Grábrók: a stunning lavafield
- The Secret Lagoon in Flúðir
- The ecovillage Sólheimar
- The eldest outdoor pool, Seljavallalaug.
Reykjavík
- My favourite restaurants. Still working on my favourite lunch spots.
- Coming up: what to bring home (or: my favourite shops)
- We did yoga in the woods
- It’s a vintage city
- Gyllti kötturinn is a fabulous shop
- I love the Laundromat Café to hang out (but not during Iceland Airwaves)
- Street art: catch it while you can
Thank you for your post.
